Forgot Admin Password

Ok, so you forgot your Windows administrator password, eh? A somewhat unpleasant situation, but well familiar to many of us. Now, how can you get administrator access to the system without a complete reformat and reinstall?

First, you can of course try and remember the password, by thinking very hard :-) Now, in all likelihood you have already done that. But, perhaps you have another administrator user which you do know the password for? That would resolve the situation too.

If not, a further possibility is to try and restore a backup of the system, for which you still know the password. Of course, the downside being that all the recent changes in the system will be gone.

A potential third option is to install a parallel operating system on another partition (which, however, only really works for Windows NT. If you do that, there is a certain logon trick which enables you to change the password for your main installation from within the parallel system.

Finally, if all else fails, you can resort to password recovery tools such as Spotmau's Password Finder utility which you get as a part of Spotmau PowerSuite.
