Windows NT
Windows NT Server
Windows NT, with NT standing for "New Technology", is a series of operating systems designed by Microsoft to be a highend, multiprocessing and multiuser, server operating system for professional customers. It was intended to be complementary to the lower-end consumer OS combination of MS-DOS + Windows 95-98 of the time, and the first real attempt of Microsoft to get a foothold in the server market, which was previously largely dominated by *nix-type server systems such as Unix, Linux, Solaris and HP-UX.
Windows NT was the first completely 32-bit version of Windows. It was intended to be highly portable, and versions were released for many different hardware architectures, including Intel, PowerPC, Alpha, MIPS and AMD processors. Furthermore, it featured NTFS, Microsofts first secure and journaled file system, instead of the older DOS FAT and FAT32 filesystems.
